Tonight, Chuck Palahniuk, author of "Fight Club," appeared before a young, well-mannered (well... there was a little of shoving at the door), and standing-room-only crowd at the Park Branch of the San Francisco Public Library. He's on tour for his tenth and most recent book titled "Rant" -- a novel set in a future where teens meet up for street derbies and a killer is on the prowl wielding his weapon of choice: rabies.

The event sponsored by the Haight-Ashbury indie bookstore Booksmith was worth braving the stifling and cramped quarters (a guy fainted 3/4 the way through the talk!) -- Chuck was a crowd-pleaser.  Throughout the night he rewarded the audience by tossing out blown-up reindeer heads, smoking fake cigarettes, and plastic body parts.  Even a few copies of the new title "Clown Girl" by Monica Drake made it into the fray.
